Overview

Ford is still king of the road in the UK with 1st and 2nd place in our top 10. A strong showing from both Vauxhall and Volkswagen makes up the next 4 places.

Once again the Ford Fiesta is still the most popular car on the road in 2021 with over 1.5 Million licensed vehicles. Combined with the Focus these two cars make up 8% of the 32 million cars on the road today.

No 1: Ford Fiesta

The ever-popular supermini has been built since 1976 and has been produced in its seventh generation since 2017. Since 2014 she has held the record of the UK's best-selling car of all time.

There are currently over 1.5 Million Fiestas on the road today

No 2: Ford Focus

Ford's compact has been a regular feature on our roads since 1999. Now in its 4th generation (since 2018) it remains a popular choice in both its hatchback and estate configurations.

No 3: Vauxhall Corsa

Vauxhall's popular supermini has been with us since 1994 (and even earlier as the Nova since 1982). With its most recent F variant in 2019 it continues to be popular for its low running costs and its "nippy" performance in an urban environment.

There are currently just over 1 Million Corsas on the road.

No 4: Volkswagen Golf

The legendary Golf is the first Volkswagen on our list. Winner of multiple World and European Car of the Year awards since the first generation appeared in 1974. Currently in its eighth generation since 2019, it remains a popular sporty compact and a highpoint of German automotive engineering.

There are currently just over 1 Million Golfs on the road, 10,000 short of the Corsa.

No 5: Vauxhall Astra

The Astra is in its seventh generation (2015) and has held on to its position as the UK's second favourite family car. It is also a firm favourite amongst the police as many forces continue to use the Astra as their primary patrol car.

There are currently just over 800,000 Astras on the road.

No 6: Volkswagen Polo

The supermini smaller brother of the Golf continues to remain popular with car buyers. Now in its seventh generation it is tending towards being a more economical Golf than distinct model in its own right.

There are currently just over 650,000 Polos on the road.

No 7: Mini Cooper

The supermini has been a firm favourite since its 2000 launch, inspired by the legendary original Mini which appeared in 1959. Currently in its third generation, it combines sporty looks with solid fuel economy and performance.

There are currently just under 650,000 Minis on the road.

No 8: BMW 3 Series

The first executive car on the top 10 list the 3 Series is BMW's best selling car and has been with us since the first generation in 1975. Currently in its seventh generation, it combines mean looks with road performance.

No 9: Nisaan QASHQAI

The most popular compact SUV on the road today. Currently in its third generation the QASHQAI is competitively priced compared to its rivals and benefits from Nissan's reputation for reliability and low running costs for an SUV.

There are currently just over 550,000 3 Series on the road.

No 10: Toyoto Yaris

The Yaris continues to be popular amongst buyers looking for a competitively priced supermini with low running costs. In this, the Yaris continues to deliver. Now in its 4th generation, hybrid Yarises are becoming a popular option.

There are currently just over 480,000 Yarises on the road.
