The London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is a new type of emissions zone that features a charge for vehicles that don't meet modern emissions standards. It's designed to reduce air pollution in the city by making certain vehicles pay a fee if they drive into the zone, thereby encouraging road users to avoid driving through the ULEZ.
For most vehicles, this corresponds to a £12.50 daily charge for driving within the zone if the vehicle doesn't meet minimum emissions standards.
The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and every day of the year, excluding Christmas day. It's meant to be a way for London to reduce its carbon footprint by encouraging people to drive cleaner cars and take public transport.
The ULEZ started its operation in April 2019 and since has expanded to cover an area approximately 18 times the size of central London, encompassing over 3.8 million people.
Petrol vehicles must meet the Euro 4 minimum emissions standards, whereas diesel cars must meet the Euro 6 minimum emissions standards.
Petrol cars meeting ULEZ emissions standards are generally newer than 2005, although some earlier models will be compliant with the standards.
Diesel cars meeting ULEZ emissions standards were generally registered after September 2015, and as with petrol cars, some earlier models will also be compliant with the ULEZ emissions standards.

If you drive a vehicle that isn't compliant with the ULEZ standards and don’t pay the charge within the allotted three days, you'll be issued a penalty charge of £160, which is reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days of the issued penalty charge notice. The same charges apply to all vehicle types.
