How the London ULEZ works
The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers almost all of Greater London and runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. Non-compliant cars, vans up to 3.5 tonnes, minibuses up to 5 tonnes and motorcycles pay £12.50 for each day they drive inside it.
A vehicle is compliant, and pays nothing, if it meets Euro 6 for diesel, Euro 4 for petrol or Euro 3 for motorcycles. Heavier goods vehicles and buses are covered by the separate Low Emission Zone (LEZ) instead, which has its own, higher charges.
Because most older diesels are non-compliant, ULEZ status is a real cost to check before buying a used car in or near London. Running the registration on a free check reads the vehicle's emissions status so you know where it stands.
