What a free check can and can't tell you

A free check answers the questions that have a public record behind them. You get the full MOT history, so you can see every test, every failure and every advisory the tester wrote down. You get the tax and identity data DVLA holds. And you get the timeline: first registration, plate changes, the shape of the car's paperwork life.

That's enough to rule a car out. A mileage reading that drops between tests, a run of advisories on the same corner of the car, a plate change nobody mentioned — any of those is a reason to walk away before you've spent a penny or an afternoon.

What it can't do is tell you who has a claim on the car. Finance, theft markers and insurance write-off categories don't appear in the free data, because they aren't in the public record. That's not a gap we can close for free; it's the line between what the state publishes and what the industry databases hold.

So use the free check first, and use it early — before you drive across three counties to see something. If it comes back clean and you're getting serious, that's the point to pay for the parts it can't see.
