How the Sheffield Clean Air Zone works
Sheffield's Clean Air Zone is a Class C scheme covering the inner ring road and the city centre. It charges the most polluting commercial vehicles but, unlike a Class D zone, it does not charge private cars or motorbikes — whatever their emissions.
A vehicle clears the zone if it meets the minimum emissions standard — broadly Euro 6 for diesels and Euro 4 for petrols. Compliant vehicles are never charged; non-compliant taxis, private-hire vehicles, vans and minibuses pay £10 a day, and non-compliant coaches, buses and HGVs pay £50 a day.
The charge applies every day of the year, around the clock, and a missed charge can lead to a £120 penalty, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. Running the registration on a free check reads the vehicle's emissions status so you can see where it stands before you buy.
