Why battery damage triggers a write-off so readily
Electric cars can be written off after damage that would leave an equivalent petrol or diesel car repairable. Two things drive that. The battery pack is often 30-50% of the car's total value. Relatively few insurers or bodyshops currently have the specialist capacity to safely assess or repair a damaged one cheaply.
So the write-off maths tips over much sooner than it would on a conventional car. That matters directly if you're checking a used EV's history before you buy. Whether used EVs are actually written off more often overall is a knottier question. The answer is more complicated.
Why EV batteries get written off so easily
Where the battery sits, and why that makes it vulnerable
Most EVs use a "skateboard" layout: a large, flat battery pack mounted low across the underside of the car. Great for handling and cabin space. It also puts the battery directly in the path of kerb strikes, deep potholes and flood water, in a way a conventional car's mechanical components underneath generally aren't.
Why insurers total the car rather than repair it
A few things push the decision towards write-off rather than repair. Once a battery is involved, the repair cost crosses the write-off threshold relative to the car's value far faster. There's also a genuine shortage of high-voltage-qualified technicians able to safely assess or repair a damaged pack.
And even inspecting a pack that might be compromised carries its own safety-quarantine costs. That's because a damaged high-voltage battery can pose a fire risk that has to be managed carefully.
Are used EVs actually more likely to be a write-off?
Two sets of numbers get quoted here, and they appear to point opposite ways. Both are real. Picking whichever one sounds more dramatic would be the easy move.
On one hand, research from FWD Consulting found that roughly one in five EVs involved in a collision are written off, often after relatively minor impacts. That was reported to cost UK businesses over £461 million a year in EV write-offs.
On the other hand, there's Cap HPI's analysis of write-offs from 2015 to August 2024. It found EVs under five years old were written off at less than half the rate of petrol and diesel cars overall (0.9% vs 1.89%). The gap is similar at one year old (0.2% vs 0.4%).
These aren't contradictory. They measure different things. The FWD Consulting figure is conditional on already being in a collision. If an EV crashes, it's disproportionately likely to be written off rather than repaired.
The Cap HPI figure is a whole-fleet rate. It covers every EV on the road, including the large majority that are never in a collision at all. On that basis the overall share ending up written off is lower than for petrol and diesel cars.
Both can be true at once. An EV that's actually crashed faces a real chance of being written off for damage a petrol or diesel car would survive as a repair. That doesn't mean EVs as a whole are more likely to end up written off. That's because fewer EVs get into collisions serious enough to trigger the question in the first place.
What write-off category means for a battery-damaged EV

The EV-specific part is this: the ABI's own salvage code was updated in May 2025 to add high-voltage-battery-specific handling rules. Some manufacturers class their batteries as non-repairable outright, so a damaged pack has to be recycled rather than fixed. Where a battery is repairable, that work needs a qualified high-voltage technician rather than a general-purpose bodyshop. That's down to the safety-critical nature of the system.
How much does EV battery damage actually cost to fix?
Figures vary by model and damage. Treat any single number as a rough guide rather than a quote.
Thatcham Research's own analysis puts BEV insurance claims at roughly 25% more expensive than an equivalent petrol or diesel claim. They also take around 14% longer to repair. Replacement high-voltage battery costs range from roughly £14,200 at the lower end to £29,500 at the higher end, depending on the vehicle.
On a car that's a few years old, a replacement battery can realistically cost more than the car itself is now worth. That's a large part of why the write-off maths tips the way it does.
You may also see a figure claiming "22% of EVs in accidents sustain battery damage," attributed to ABI/Thatcham research. We couldn't trace that figure to either source.
It appears to conflate a different, unrelated statistic: the Institute of the Motor Industry's estimate that around 22% of UK technicians were fully EV-qualified. That was roughly accurate in early 2024, but has since moved well past it (over a third, per IMI's own more recent data). So it isn't a live figure to quote either way.

Buying a used EV — checking for hidden battery or collision damage
At the viewing, look for:
- Underbody scrapes, dents or repainted patches on or near the battery casing.
- Inconsistent panel gaps, or paint that doesn't quite match between adjacent panels, both of which can point to repair work.
- A battery State of Health (SoH) reading that doesn't match the car's age and mileage. Unusually poor health on a relatively young, low-mileage car is worth questioning.
- Gaps in the service or repair history around a period that doesn't add up.
- A price that undercuts similar listings without an obvious explanation. Ask directly why.
What a history check does and doesn't tell you

One limit is worth being blunt about. A history check tells you nothing about the battery's health. It doesn't test the battery, so a clean report is not evidence of a healthy pack.

Buying a Cat S or Cat N EV specifically — extra questions to ask
Say the used EV you're looking at carries a Cat S or Cat N marker. A few extra questions are worth asking then, beyond what you'd ask on a petrol or diesel car in the same category.
Start with the paperwork. Ask for the repairer's post-repair battery State of Health report specifically. Ask what high-voltage safety sign-off the repair carried.
I'd also want an independent EV specialist to inspect it before committing. Not every general mechanic is equipped to properly assess a repaired high-voltage system.
