How long does an MOT last?

So, how long is an MOT valid for? An MOT certificate lasts 12 months from the date the car passes the test. Once that date arrives, there's no grace period of any kind. Gov.uk's wording is blunt: "You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out."

When does a car first need an MOT?

A car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. From then on, it needs one every year. A few classes are tested sooner: taxis and ambulances from one year old. A small number of vehicles, including some over 40 years old, are exempt.

How early can you get an MOT?

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current one runs out. Test inside that window and you keep your existing renewal date. It works as if the car had been tested on the day the old certificate expired. Note the exact window: a month minus a day, not a flat 30 days.

Here's a worked example. Say your MOT expires on 15 May. The window opens on 16 April. Pass on any day from then on and the new certificate still runs to 15 May next year.

Test before the window opens and things change. The renewal date resets to one year (minus a day) from the day the car passes. So a pass on 14 April, two days too soon, moves your expiry to 13 April. The old 15 May date is gone.

This rule is about renewing an MOT the car already holds. A first MOT has no earlier certificate to keep a date from. It's simply due by the third anniversary of registration, as above.

It's also the Great Britain rule. If the last MOT was done in Northern Ireland and the next test is in Great Britain, the renewal date doesn't carry over. It's set from the date of the GB test instead.

Can you drive to an MOT without a valid MOT?

Yes, but only in two situations. Gov.uk allows driving to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from somewhere for the car to be repaired. Nothing else qualifies, and there's no grace period after the certificate expires. Driving without a valid MOT outside those situations can bring a fine of up to £1,000.

Those exceptions have a hard limit too. They don't make an unsafe car legal to drive. Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition is a separate offence, whatever its MOT status.
