MOT and road tax

What an MOT tests, what road tax costs, how to declare a car off the road, and which UK cities charge you to drive an older car into them.

Keeping a car legal comes down to three things, and a fourth that decides what using it costs.

Two of them catch out buyers more than owners. Tax and MOT both belong to the car as it stands, not to what a seller tells you, and you can check both before you buy. Check the MOT first. Its history tells you about the car, while the tax only tells you about the paperwork.

The first is the MOT. What an MOT tests walks the actual checklist, and the most common failures covers what trips cars up most, much of which you can spot yourself beforehand. If you're buying, MOT advisories are the useful read. The same advisory year after year says more about a car than a clean pass does.

The price has a legal ceiling. The MOT fee cap explains what it is, why garages want it raised and how to pay less than it now.

How long an MOT lasts is the one to read before you book a test. Go too early and you lose the renewal date you already had.

DVSA's newest figures moved tyres above brakes for the first time since the series begins in 2013.

The second is tax, and it doesn't transfer when a car changes hands. The previous owner's tax buys you nothing at all. Car tax bands sets out what you'll pay and why two similar cars can differ so much.

The third is what to do when a car isn't being driven. SORN explains declaring it off the road properly, and what that does and doesn't allow.

Then there are the charges. ULEZ and clean air zones is the one to read first. The schemes really do differ, and the names are close enough to mislead. How to avoid the ULEZ charge covers the legal ways to stop paying.

City guides cover Birmingham, Bristol, Bath and Sheffield. Paying a charge and what Class D exempt means handle the two questions people arrive with.

If you've read that the MOT rules changed this year, what actually changed in 2026 sorts the real changes from the ones that keep being reported and never happen.

Electric cars stopped being tax-free in April 2025, and what an EV pays now depends almost entirely on when it was first registered. An early EV can cost £20 a year. A recent one over £50,000 can cost far more.

Check the real number plate before you buy an older diesel. People guess about these zones and get it wrong a lot. The schemes don't share borders, standards or charges, so a car that's free in one city can cost you every day in the next.

MOT and Road Tax Guide: Staying Legal With a Used Car

Pay a ULEZ or Clean Air Zone Charge, or Dispute a Fine

Pay ULEZ at tfl.gov.uk, and the seven English Clean Air Zones through one gov.uk service. Been fined for a car you'd sold, or one that was never yours? The rules say who pays, and we show you what evidence to send.

How to Avoid the ULEZ Charge (Legally)

There's no loophole. You stop paying ULEZ by driving a car that meets the standard, or by qualifying for one of TfL's exemptions. The scrappage scheme has closed, and TfL lists no retrofit option for cars.

How Long Is an MOT Valid For?

An MOT certificate lasts 12 months from the day the car passes. Once it runs out there's no grace period at all. Time the renewal right, though, and you can test up to a month early without losing a single day of cover.

New MOT rules 2026: what actually changed

Search for new MOT rules and you'll find plenty. Almost none of it changes anything for someone who just wants their car tested, and the change most people have heard about was rejected two years ago.

The Most Common MOT Failures in the UK (and Why)

Lighting and signalling faults fail more cars than anything else, then suspension, tyres, brakes and visibility. That ranking comes from DVSA's own test data rather than garage folklore. Most of it is cheap wear you can spot on your own driveway a week before the test.

Tyres Overtake Brakes in the Latest MOT Data

DVSA published its latest MOT figures on 10 September. Tyres have moved above brakes in the failure table for the first time since the figures begin in 2013. It isn't because tyres got worse. Tyres are behind three in five of every dangerous defect found at an MOT.

Car Tax Bands Explained: What You'll Pay in 2026

Road tax doesn't come with the car. Buy second-hand and the seller's tax is cancelled the moment the sale is registered, so you have to tax it in your own name before you drive away. No grace period. After that, the rates: what each band costs in 2026 and what changed on 1 April.

Do Electric Cars Pay Road Tax? 2026 VED Rules Explained

Yes. Electric cars have paid road tax since April 2025. What a used one costs turns on one date. Buy one registered before 1 April 2025 and the £440-a-year expensive-car supplement never applies, whatever it cost new.

ULEZ and Clean Air Zones Explained: 2026 UK Guide

One check won't cover them all. London has two schemes, ULEZ and the Low Emission Zone. England's cities have Clean Air Zones, and Scotland has its own Low Emission Zones. Four schemes, three checkers, and very different charges. Buy a car that's too dirty for where you drive and you pay every day you use it.

Bristol Clean Air Zone (Not a ULEZ): Charges & Check

Bristol has no ULEZ. It has a Clean Air Zone, and that one does charge ordinary private cars £9 a day when they don't meet the emissions standard. Bath and Sheffield charge them nothing, which is where most of the confusion starts.

MOT Advisories Explained: Spot a Shady MOT History

Picked up an advisory, or found a run of them in a car's MOT history? An advisory isn't a fail. It's the tester noting something that's wearing but still legal on the day. The pattern across several years tells you more, and reading it is a buyer's skill rather than a mechanic's.

Sheffield Clean Air Zone: Charges & How to Check

Driving a car or motorbike into Sheffield? You won't pay a penny, whatever its emissions. Taxis, vans and lorries do pay though. This guide covers the rates, the exemptions, and how to check any vehicle before you commit.

MOT and Road Tax Guide: Staying Legal With a Used Car

Three things decide whether a used car is legal on the road: a valid MOT, road tax in your own name, and a SORN if it's staying off the road instead. A fourth, ULEZ and Clean Air Zone charges, decides what using it costs. Each one gets a plain answer here, then a guide of its own.

Bath Clean Air Zone: Charges & How to Check

Bath's Clean Air Zone doesn't charge private cars. Not a penny, whatever the car's age or emissions. Vans, taxis, minibuses and lorries are the ones paying here, and the two daily rates are set out below.

Birmingham CAZ D: Charges, Exemptions & How to Check

£8 a day, every day, if your car doesn't meet Birmingham's emissions standard. Most English clean air zones leave private cars alone. Birmingham's is one of only two that don't, so the car you're about to buy matters more here than almost anywhere else.

CAZ Class D Exempt: What It Means

"CAZ Class D exempt" turns up on sat-navs, road signs and council letters. It isn't a fine. It means the zone ahead can charge private cars, and that a vehicle has been marked as not paying. Whether that vehicle is yours is worth checking.

SORN Explained: How to Declare a Car Off the Road

Off the road for a while? A SORN, or Statutory Off Road Notification, tells the DVLA that a vehicle isn't being used or kept on a public road. Declare one and you stop paying vehicle tax on it, and you stop having to insure it, for as long as it stays off the road.

What Is Tested in an MOT? The Full 2026 Checklist

Every item a tester checks comes from DVSA's own inspection manual. This checklist follows it chapter by chapter, so you can cross-check any car against the primary source. A pass only means the car met the legal minimum on the day it was tested, not that it's mechanically sound.
