Payload and gross vehicle weight
Start by working out if the van can legally carry your usual load. That figure is the payload.
Then check which MOT class it falls into. After that, run a history check the same way you would on a car.

Every van has a gross vehicle weight, or GVW. The official term is "maximum authorised mass". gov.uk defines it as "the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it's being used on the road."
The manufacturer sets that figure. You'll find it on the van's weight plate. You don't need to work it out yourself.
Payload is what you actually get to use. Take the GVW and subtract the van's own unladen weight, sometimes called the kerb weight. Fuel, driver, passengers and cargo all come out of what's left.
Go over it and you risk a fine. You're also driving an overloaded van. That affects braking distance and handling, and it can invalidate your insurance if you have an accident while over the limit.
MOT Class 4 vs Class 7
Most vans are tested the same way as cars. The class depends on weight, not on the word "van" in the listing. From gov.uk's MOT inspection manual:
- Class 4 covers cars, motor caravans, and light goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight. Plenty of small and mid-size vans sit here.
- Class 7 covers goods vehicles over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg design gross weight. Bigger panel vans usually sit here instead.
The model name won't tell you the class. Manufacturers sell the same van in weight variants either side of 3,000kg, so two vans wearing the same badge can fall in different classes.
This isn't just paperwork. It tells you which garages can test the van.
You don't have to guess which class a van falls into. The design gross weight is on the VIN plate. That figure decides the class, so read the plate when you view the van. It's the first thing I'd look at.
A Class 7 test costs a bit more than a Class 4 test. The maximum is £58.60 against £54.85. Both figures move, so gov.uk's fee table is the one to check.
One rule matters if you're looking at an electric van. Build a van the size of a standard Class 7 model and it weighs more once the battery goes in. DVSA's MOT Special Notice 01-26 recognises that. Since 1 June 2026 it extends Class 7 to zero-emission goods vehicles in a heavier band too.
Two changes come with that. Their first Class 7 MOT falls three years after first registration, not one year. And minimum tyre tread depth rises from 1mm to 1.6mm, in line with the rest of Class 7.
"Zero emission" means exactly that. Hybrids don't qualify, range extenders included. If the van has an engine in it anywhere, this band isn't the one it sits in.
So don't assume a heavier electric van needs a different, HGV-level test just because it's over 3,500kg on paper.
Can you drive a van that heavy? Yes, you can. A category B licence, the standard car one, covers an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle up to 4,250kg maximum authorised mass. Conditions apply, so read gov.uk's guidance before you commit to one.
Clean air zones and the daily charge
A cheap used van is more likely to be an older diesel. That's where emissions charges bite hardest.
Most zones judge a van much the same way they judge a car. Diesels generally need to meet Euro 6. Petrol vans generally need Euro 4 or better. Miss it in London and the ULEZ charge is £12.50 a day for a van up to 3.5 tonnes, the same as for a car.
TfL runs a second scheme across the same city, the Low Emission Zone, and it starts at 1.205 tonnes unladen rather than 3.5 tonnes gross. A van can sit in both zones at once, so an older diesel failing both standards pays £12.50 for ULEZ and £100 for the LEZ on the same day. The LEZ standard is only Euro 3 for particulates, so most vans clear it, but check rather than assume. Don't confuse it with Scotland's Low Emission Zones, which share the initials and work nothing like it.

Why a used van needs a history check
The same risks apply to a van as to a car. Outstanding finance, an insurance write-off category, a mileage discrepancy, a stolen vehicle record. Prior use matters more for a van than for a typical private car. Plenty of used vans have worked as courier, rental or trade vehicles. Those jobs mean more miles, extra wear on the load area and drivetrain, and sometimes several keepers in a short time. The odometer alone won't tell you any of it.
Buying checklist
Some things only show up when you see the van. Go through these at the viewing, alongside the usual test drive checks:
- Load area condition. Check the floor, ply-lining (if fitted) and rear doors for damage consistent with regular heavy use.
- Rust and underbody. Vans work harder and cover more miles than the average private car, so check the sills, wheel arches and underbody for corrosion. Local delivery work is especially hard on them.
- Tyre wear pattern. Uneven wear across the rear axle can point to persistent overloading, so check it against the payload figure above.
- Service history. Look for a stamped or digital service record from a reputable garage. Be wary of a van with no record at all, given the mileage it's likely covered.
- Door seals and locks. Rear and side-loading door seals take a beating on a working van, so check for perishing or gaps that let water in.
Common questions
What should I check before buying a used van?
Check its payload against what you need to carry. Then check which MOT class it falls into. Then run a history check for finance, write-off, theft and mileage. Last, look over the load area and underbody for wear consistent with hard use. The first two are the ones car buyers never have to think about.
What's the difference between a Class 4 and Class 7 MOT?

How do I find a van's payload capacity?
Find the weight plate and read off the gross vehicle weight. Then subtract the van's own unladen weight. The plate is usually inside the driver's door frame or under the bonnet. Don't rely on a brochure figure for a base-spec model. If the van you're looking at has extras fitted, they eat into what you can carry.
Do I need a history check on a used van?
